When museum and gallery workers were surveyed, only 42.9% rated their exhibitions as somewhat accessible.
Informed by observational research conducted in galleries and questionnaires distributed online.
Young Couple with a Curious Daughter
The Sanchez parents need a way to nurture their daughter's growing interest in arts and culture during their family outings to galleries.
Photo by Kadyn Pierce on UnsplashLabels are not always accessible: Emily is not always able to read or understand didactic texts.
Crowded Galleries: Free events means that crowding can make it hard to fully enjoy the gallery experience.
Find more events of interest: The Sanchez's want to find more relevant exhibits for their daughter's interests.
Help Emily: Her parents want to make sure she is able to explore to her full extent with their help while in galleries.

Eileen needs a way to easily sort and access her favourite pieces from the multiple exhibitions she's visited when creating art pieces.
Photo by Anthony Metcalfe on UnsplashCreate more art: Going to so many galleries has inspired Eileen to pursue the hobby for herself.
Collect inspiration: Find an efficient way to document her found inspiration, so that it's easy to access.
Failing eye-sight: Due to her age, Eileen is finding it increasingly difficult to physically see.
Lack of Organization: Her current system of using her photo gallery is limited and not reliable.
Participants were given scenarios to run through, they were generally confused in navigating the save feature and how to start the process of scanning an NFC tag.
Scenarios included: scanning the didactic text, changing the language, bookmarking the exhibit piece, and listening to the audio version of the didactic text.
Physical didactic texts are limited to what the curator of the exhibit deems necessary, which often times can leave visitors wanting more information that they need to seek out themselves, usually on their devices- phones or tablets.
UI was developed in both light and dark mode to echo the customizable nature of Exhibit Access.
Working on ExhibitAccess for a school year taught me a lot about myself, namely that I am passionate about user research and ideating. I also realized how much stronger end-product are with a team, since I found it difficult to progress in my difficulties (UI design & graphic design).
Primary Research
Questionnaire to record demographic specific opinions on loneliness and AI, and 2 focus groups run on competitor products.
Secondary Research
Articles, competitor blogs, mental health organizations, social media posts/forums, StatsCan, WGSN trend analysis.
Red Thread Innovation’s requirement: Find a market that was unsaturated and projected to grow. Artificially Intelligent (AI) companions was our opportunity.
Participants independently had a conversation with Beta Character AI’s psychologist chatbot, and shared their experiences with focus group.
Working on Tomo with Electric Boogaloo gave me insight on leading a team, specifically which practices lead to success. Being able to rely on team members to fill gaps in my abilities, is what I believe I owe our success to. I especially gained insight into how much I love to research and work directly with users & stakeholders.
During the pitch presentation I was confident in conveying our solution to Red Thread Innovations and answering their questions. Ok Ikejiani said he would use our application, we won the semester-long design sprint, and later found out we were nominated for a 2023 Student Generator Award.

Susie has a growing interest in sustainable fashion due to the quality of clothes it produces. She is however, on a budget, and finds herself frequenting second-hand shops to find sustainable pieces at a discount.
Find Sustainable brands: Susie’s knowledge on sustainable brand names is shallow, and she wants to get better at identifying brands she should keep an eye out for when she’s at second-hand stores.
Save up for Sustainable Fashion: While second-hand shops have given her pieces she loves, she wants to be able to buy a sustainable piece brand new.
Location: Susie’s based in a location that has limited options for shopping sustainably, with the exception of thrift stores. She does not know where to find retailers that sell sustainably.
Cost: Buying full price is challenging as a student. Clothing can only take up so much of her budget and she will only feel buying a piece brand new is worth it if there’s a discount.
Susie can earn EcoCredits by learning about the origins of sustainable clothing or buying from sustainable brands.
EcoCredits can be used to unlock discounts on sustainable clothing, making the purchases more feasible for Susie.
Location based directory ensures Susie can find retailers nearby and what they are doing sustainably.
Making access to the application visible while shopping was important to ensure connecting with the consumer. QR codes were imagined as the solution to the exposure issue, and a comprehensive onboarding was created.
Team Appa is an Honourable Mention at the end of the Creative Jam. This was especially validating due to this being my first design-sprint competition entered. Working alongside Jenny Nguyen made me more confident working in collaboration with other designers.
